Course Description:

This course introduces the unlikely field of martial arts as a mind-body approach to relieve the challenges commonly faced by patients in hospital or managing chronic medical illnesses. Although commonly seen as simply a way to fight, the field of martial arts, in fact, is an ideal mind-body modality, with a rich multi-layered body of knowledge on dealing with physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual adversity. With appropriate adaption to the pediatric environment, the martial arts can be used as a safe, enjoyable, and non-threatening introduction to mind-body principles, which form the foundation to mindfulness and mediation practices used to soothe the physical and emotional needs of children in pain and/or managing symptoms from a medical illness.

Course Objectives

  1. Learn fundamentals on how to present basic martial arts principles and activities from a Mind-Body perspective, to empower pediatric patients.

  2. Learn how to use basic martial arts principles and activities to provide an emotional outlet through physical activity.

  3. Learn how martial arts principles and activities can be incorporated into mindfulness mediation and guided meditation techniques.
