Course Description:

This workshop will introduce the concept of community drumming, which can be beneficial to a wide variety of populations. Rhythm circles rely on participants to listen, cooperate and communicate. It is widely reported that therapeutic drumming promotes relaxation and can support relief of chronic pain.  In this workshop, participants will learn about various percussion instruments, basic foundations and explore drumming techniques.

Course Objectives

  1. Participants will learn basic types of instruments to use in community drumming

  2. Participants will learn facilitation techniques for groups and dyads

  3. Participants will learn benefits and contraindications for drumming with various health populations

About the Instructor

Karen Popkin, MA, MT-BC, LCATis a Board-Certified Music Therapist and Licensed Creative Arts Therapist. Practicing since 1996, she has worked in mental health and medical populations. At Memorial Sloan Kettering, Karen is the Program Coordinator for Creative Arts and Movement therapies in the Integrative Medicine Service where she engages in program development and clinical work with inpatients. When not working, Karen enjoys spending time outdoors and playing euphonium as a member of the Metropolitan Music Community.

Cancellations prior to two weeks before a scheduled training receive a refund minus a $15 processing fee. Participants who cancel their enrollment less than 10 days before the first continuing education session will not be refunded but can receive credit towards a future training. A full refund or credit is given to participants with unexpected medical or personal emergencies. If Dancing Dialogue LCAT LMHC PLLC cancels the entire workshop or training your paid fee will be refunded in full or credited to another workshop at your request. If you transfer to another workshop and then cancel, do not attend or leave early there is no further transfer.  For clinicians with more than one license, an additional CE certificate can be purchased towards your second license CE requirement at the cost of $25.
