Course Description:

Do you want to incorporate more art making into your therapeutic practice but find your overtures met with frustrating resistance, unsettling decompensation, or that your clients have a tendency to “play it safe”? This course will provide a basic overview of how to choose materials based on client’s clinical needs, artistic ability and preferences and physical and developmental abilities that will provide containment while circumventing defensiveness in a way that is fun, comfortable and revealing for both the client and the therapist. The course will also explore clinical issues like perfectionism and control that art materials can bring up. Ample case material will be presented to illustrate how best to choose materials. Participants will also learn basic assessment of their clients artistic needs based on the Expressive Therapies Continuum.

Learning Objectives Include:

  1. Learn to categorize art materials into four (4) distinct quality spectrums: wet/ dry, hard/ soft, constrained/ flowing, and 2D/ 3D and be able to match specific clinical goals to each of these quality spectrums.

  2. Identify the four (4) levels of artistic expression on the Expressive Therapies Continuum and the types of materials that complement each level of functioning.
